Tuskegee held an early second half lead, but three unanswered scores allowed the University of West Alabama to pull away for a 36-16 victory over the Golden Tigers Saturday afternoon in Livingston, Ala.
UWA got on the board first with a five-yard touchdown run at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter. The extra point was no good giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Just before the end of the first quarter, TU would respond with a 10-play 56-yard drive, capped off by a six-yard touchdown run by Eric Bright Jr.
A 14-yard run by Jack Smith and a safety extended UWA’s lead to 15-7 midway through the second quarter.
Ivonte Patterson, who rushed for 55 first half yards on 11 carries brought Skegee to within two with a one-yard TD run with 25 seconds left before halftime. The drive occupied 80 yards on 14 plays, making the score 15-13 at the break.
The Golden Tigers took its opening drive of the second half down the field on a 12-play 65-yard drive, but things stalled and TU had to settle for a Arnes Huskic 33-yard field goal, giving the team a 16-15 lead with 11:36 left to play in the third quarter.
UWA went on to score three unanswered touchdowns to round out the scoring for a final of 36-16.
Patterson led Skegee’s rushing attack with 76 yards on 15 carries. The Atlanta native averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Jamarcus Ezell added 40 yards on the ground. Ahmad Deramus completed 11 of his 23 passing attempts for 81 yards along with one interception.
Ricky Norris finished with a game-high 11 tackles for TU while Carl Mathews added 10 stops including nine solos.
The Golden Tigers travel to Albany, Ga. next Saturday to face Albany State. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. and will be carried live via Flo Sports with a video stream with live audio coverage provided by the Tuskegee Digital Network.
