SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley and linebacker Francis Bernard have been named Pac-12 Players of the Week for their performances in Utah’s 38-13 win over Washington State on Saturday, Sept. 28. Huntley earned the offensive award for the first time this year while Bernard was awarded for his defensive performance for the second time this season.
Huntley had his fifth career 300-yard passing game vs. the Cougars, throwing for 334 yards, going 21-of-30 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had 31 yards rushing with two rushing scores.
Huntley completed three passes of over 40 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown to Samson Nacua to give Utah a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. His first rushing touchdown of the day came with 22 seconds left in the first half (15 yards) to give Utah a 21-13 lead and he punctuated the game with a three-yard score in the final two minutes of the contest. Huntley completed passes to nine different receivers.
Huntley’s award is his second career weekly honor. He was also named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against USC on Oct. 20, 2018.
Huntley was also named the Rose Bowl Pac-12 Player of the Week as well as one of the Davey O’Brien Award ‘Great 8’ performers of the week.
Huntley is ranked seventh in FBS and second in the Pac-12 with a .746 completion percentage. He is 12th in FBS (2nd Pac-12) with a 179.3 pass efficiency rating.
Bernard led Utah with 12 tackles, the second time this season he has led the team in tackles, which tied his season high. He had his second interception of the year with 5:36 remaining in the game, returning the ball 22 yards to set up Utah’s final touchdown of the game, and also had a pass breakup in the final minutes.
Bernard was part of a Utah defense that held Washington State to just 313 yards of total offense. The Cougars came into the game averaging 605.2 yards of total offense.
Bernard also earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier this year for his performance against BYU on Aug. 29, 2019.
Bernard is second on the team with 37 tackles this season (7.4 per game). He is tied for third in FBS and leads the Pac-12 with 80 interception return yards and is tied for fifth in the league with two interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown. Utah ranks third in the country in rushing defense (53.8).
Utah is 4-1 (1-1 Pac-12) on the season and is ranked 17th in the latest Associated Press and Coaches polls. The Utes have a bye this weekend before returning to the field at Oregon State on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. PT (6 p.m. MT).
