BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The 46th Annual Paul Short Run is here! The Lehigh men’s cross country team will play host to one the largest cross country events in the country on Saturday.
“The Paul Short Run is a special day for all the schools that compete, but especially so for our team. Goodman Campus is transformed into a cross country mecca for the weekend and it is great to be the face of our sport during that time period.” said head coach Todd Etters.
Fresh off a bye week, the Mountain Hawks feel their ready to make a splash. “I expect to see our entire team raise their level this weekend,” expressed Etters. “We are nearing the most important meets of the season and every race from here on out should see us better than the week before.”
Lehigh last appeared in a race at the Iona Meet of Champions on Sept. 20. For the second straight race, junior Brad DeMassa led the charge for the Brown and White. Helping secure an eighth-place team finish, DeMassa finished 24th overall (24:48.50). In all, Lehigh managed to place five of its runners inside the top-55.
Throughout the season so far, the Mountain Hawks have had contributions made from a ton of their athletes. Senior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum won the Lehigh Invitational, while fellow senior led the Brown and White at the Harry Lang Invitational. Along with DeMassa, a few runners who are coming into this race scorching hot are Michael Mitchell (back-to-back top-5 finishes for Lehigh) and Sean Brown (Lehigh top-5 finisher in all four meets).
On Saturday, Lehigh will have runners competing in the Gold Race and the 8K Open Race.
“This race is unique just because of the sheer mass of runners,” said Etters. “It will be very important for us to run together as a team because it is easy to lose track of your teammates.”
The Mountain Hawks have had success recently in the Paul Short Run. Just last year, Lehigh finished 17th among the 41-team field. Two years ago, the Brown and White finished 20th out of 40 teams. This year, Lehigh will look to continue its streak of improving finishes.
With the updated rankings coming out on Tuesday, Lehigh remains 15th in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic rankings. In the top-15 ranking, 12 other schools ahead of them will all be competing on Saturday in Bethlehem.
With a plethora of teams competing, hundreds and hundreds of runners racing at a time, masses of fans and spectators cheering you on, adding that it’s also exam week, how do you prepare for a race like this? “Training is always a little tricky when we are in exam week,” added Etters. “We take pride in balancing out the academic and athletic workload. We will really need to focus on recovery because we will be a little out of our normal routine.”
