BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a dominating win at the CCSU Ted Owen Invitational, the Lehigh women’s cross country team continues its season with the historic Paul Short Run on Saturday. Saturday’s day-long event will be the 46th edition of the Paul Short Run. The first race will begin at 9:30 a.m.
“Hosting and competing in this caliber competition is one of the main highlights of our cross country season,” expressed head coach Debbie Utesch. “Our program takes a lot of pride in providing schools from across the country and Canada the opportunity to race on a championship course in a professionally run, high quality competition.
In their last time out, the Mountain Hawks accomplished what they set out to do. Running its full squad for only the second time of the season, Lehigh had a goal of going and winning the race. Not only did Lehigh win, they dominated. Placing six runners inside the top-10, the Mountain Hawks finishes first among the 19-team field with a score of 28 points.
For the second time this season, Susie Poore paced the Brown on White at the Ted Owen Invitational. Poore finished third overall in the 5K race with a time of 18:18.10. in the first race of the season, the junior was the first Lehigh finisher to cross the line, finishing eighth.
As we hit the halfway point in the cross country season, Lehigh has enjoyed great success through the first half. Alongside Poore, senior Ashleigh Crawford was the first Lehigh finisher in the Harry Lang Invitational and the Lafayette Dual. In the Lafayette Dual, Crawford won her first collegiate race.
Senior Hannah Bonaguidi has been a force for the Brown and White as well. In all three of her races, Bonaguidi has been one of Lehigh’s strongest runners. The senior has finished inside Lehigh’s top-4 all three races.
After sitting out the first two races, Dianna Hammerstone’s return gave the Mountain Hawks a solid core. In her first race this season, Hammerstone finished second overall at the Lafayette Dual.
Freshmen Andrea Miller and Madison Zaun have excelled in the first half of the season. Miller was the second Lehigh finisher (ninth overall) in the Lehigh Invitational, while Zaun comes into Paul Short on a high note. At the CCSU Ted Owen Invitational, Zaun finished fourth overall (second Lehigh finisher) in her best race so far.
In the last two years, the Mountain Hawks recorded back-to-back-to-back finishes inside the top-20. With a strong core and impressive freshman, the Brown and White will look to make a splash on Saturday. “Our women love to toe the line with national caliber teams and challenge themselves to race at a higher level,” expressed Utesch. “It’s a unique opportunity to do this on your home course.”
In the latest USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic ranking, Lehigh ranks 10th. With the majority of the teams in the top-15 competing in Bethlehem on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks will have their shot to compete against top-notch teams.
